And, like curling and organised poker, it’s a sport guaranteed to make me curl up in a little satisfied ball and sleep until the penultimate lap. It’s not my fault: it’s the timing. If you want to keep an audience on tenterhooks you put your thrilling, two hundred mile per hour sport on TV immediately after 24 and before Darren Brown Castrates Himself – Live!, not immediately after lunch. But up close it’s a lot more interesting. Partly it’s because the boring, monotonous whine of the cars on TV is transformed into a wild howl, interspersed with guttural backfiring under braking. It’s impossible to ignore, and, should you get too close to the pits without ear plugs (idiot), exceptionally painful.
There’s nothing to touch it for speed. Watch ten cars go around the same corner and you become blasé – but compare the speed of an F1 car to that of a souped-up Lotus Elise going around the same corner and the Lotus looks like it’s being driven by a 60 year-old nun with cataracts and legs too short to properly push down the accelerator, no matter how wild-eyed the maniac behind the wheel is in real life. Even in the pits, where the speed limit is a sedate hundred kilometres per hour, cars whoosh past with a scream and a physical rush of displaced air.
At the end of the day, Formula 1 is the same group of cars going around the same corners in succession, and it takes a certain kind of person to pay attention to it for more than a few minutes. So after a while I lost a certain amount of interest, which is why this story ends here. In other news, if someone could buy me one of these, that would be great:
