Guilfest 2006

“Right, I’m off to find some hash.” A new-found friends trots into the distance.
Local festivals swing between being embarrassing events for locals and teenagers and proper events, and Guilfest treads the line between the two perfectly. The main stage, for instance, was headlined by Embrace, a band so tepid a fellow festival goer remarked, “they’re too boring to stop.” But then you already know their entire back-catalogue (even if you don’t know it).
Most of the time, the key is to ignore the headline acts, particularly when the mix is diverse.
We found Dead! Dead! Dead! at the Rock Stage. Luckily, they rocked. Luckily because Southampton’s pop music heritage currently consists of Craig David and not much else. They were as good as we’d been told – visit their websiteto see more.
After that, it was the turn of the Architects (incorrectly referred to as the Editors in my Flickr set. It’s late, ok?) to go on. Here’s the thing: I can’t decide whether they’re a familiar name because they’re actually famous, or if it’s because the Architects is such an obvious name for a band – think the Strokes, the Editors, or the White Stripes. I think it’s the definite article that throws me.
And oh, the Lightning Seeds were there too. They weren’t too bad – crowd pleasing “Don’t Ever Change†aside they’ve got some good stuff, and I like the guitarist’s tattoos.
Embrace were dull. Not good, not bad, just uninspiring music for people who don’t know better. Being the headline act, though they did get the biggest crowd, best light show and most earnest fans.
The best, though, were Hayseed Dixie. They’re a cover band, yes, but one that covers bands such as the Beastie Boys and Green Day in the same set: the result is some of the finest live music you’ll ever hear. “Get some songs of your own,†snorted an unimpressed member of the crowd, but his eyes lit up when we told him that Embrace were still on, so you can never tell. Even better, they leapt all over the monitors to lean out over the photographer’s pit and generally played up to the cameras, which equals pictures like this:
