Illinois by Road
By Dave • November 9th, 2007It’s 209 miles to Harrisburg, Illinois from Champaign. It’s a tiny town (circa 9,000 people), hemmed in by farms and fields, fed by just a few arterial roads.
It’s further south than St Louis, and a mere hawk and spit of tobacco from the state border with Tennessee, which means that a good proportion of the people we ran into had a deeply pleasing southern twang. We’ve been called y’all a thrilling number of times, and also ran across the biggest cross I’d ever seen on the way - pure white, and 198 feet high, and 113 feet at its widest point. We were testing the car’s cruise control at the time, and as such were preoccupied by matters such as swerving and the central reservation, so no pictures here.
It’s also religion central down there. Favourites so far:

(unremarkable, but for the fact that it was on a bank)
